I am now working at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) where I have been since 1987. I am currently the editor of IMF Staff Papers. I will join the Notre Dame faculty for Fall ’09.
I am a graduate of Wake Forest University (1970, undergraduate) and of University of Rochester (1977, graduate). In between Wake and Rochester I worked as a real estate appraiser in High Point, NC and in Syracuse, NY. My first post-grad economics job was at University of Virginia. I left UVA on leave to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve for 2.5 years. I then returned to UVA for a semester only to take a job at Northwestern in fall 1983.
I have only one real research interest - extreme events. I started this work with Peter Garber at UVA. Peter and I have I have an MIT press book collecting our work. I also work on international finance, but I tend to look for extremes there too, like regime transitions.
In addition, I have served as co-editor for the AER and JIE.
I will update and fill in this webpage in September ’09.
